Local Tips & Transport
Louage (Shared Taxis) for Inter-City Travel: The louage (pronounced loo-ahj) is a white car with a colored stripe (red for the Sahel region) that acts as a shared, inter-city taxi. It is the cheapest and often fastest way to travel between Sousse, Monastir, and El Djem. They depart when full from designated stations.
Train (SNCFT): A comfortable and reliable option for longer distances, the national train network connects Sousse and Monastir to Tunis, as well as the unique line to El Djem. Check schedules in advance.
Metro-Sahel (Light Rail): A convenient local light rail line connects Sousse, Monastir, and Mahdia, offering a scenic and low-cost way to hop between the major coastal towns.
Taxis (Within Cities): Yellow, metered taxis are plentiful in Sousse and Monastir. Ensure the driver uses the meter (“le compteur”) or agree on a fare beforehand. Taxis are very affordable.
Walking is best for the Medinas: The historic centres (Medinas) are pedestrian-only and best explored on foot. Wear comfortable shoes, as the paving can be uneven.
Bargaining in the Souk: Haggling is expected, especially in the souks (markets) of the Sousse Medina. Start at about half the asking price and negotiate politely. If you don’t wish to buy, a firm but polite “La, Chokran” (No, Thank You) is usually respected.
The Best Time to Visit El Djem: Visit the amphitheater early in the morning or late in the afternoon to avoid the intense midday heat, especially in summer. It is completely exposed to the sun.
Dress Code and Respect: While resort areas are generally very liberal, especially along the beaches, it is respectful to dress modestly when exploring the Medinas, visiting religious sites like mosques (women should cover their shoulders and knees), or using public transport.
Dining and Hospitality: Tunisian meals are a time for family and generosity. Couscous is the national dish and is a must-try. Tipping (usually 5-10%) is appreciated in restaurants and for helpful services.
Language: The official language is Arabic, and French is widely spoken and understood, especially in tourism and business. Learning a few Arabic phrases (Salam Alaikum – Hello; Shukran – Thank you) will be very well received.
Hidden Gems:
- The Great Mosque of Kairouan: While technically outside the Sahel coast, the magnificent and ancient Great Mosque in the nearby holy city of Kairouan is a highly recommended day trip, easily reachable by louage.
- Skanes in Monastir: Look for the beautiful, traditional white and blue architecture that is typical of the region, especially in the old Skanes neighborhood near the airport.
- The Port of Sousse: While the Medina is busy, the fishing port provides a quieter, authentic glimpse into local life, especially in the early morning when the daily catch is brought in.
- The Cisterns of El Djem: When visiting the amphitheater, seek out the Roman cisterns that stored water for the city—they are a fascinating, often overlooked part of the site.
