Local Tips & Transport
Car is Highly Recommended: While Trabzon city is walkable and has public transport, a rental car is the best and most flexible way to visit key sites like Sümela Monastery, Uzungöl, and the surrounding Black Sea coast. The mountain roads can be challenging, so ensure you are comfortable driving.
Minibuses (Dolmuş): These shared taxis/minibuses are the most common and practical way to get around the city and to nearby towns. They follow fixed routes but stop almost anywhere along the way.
They are incredibly affordable. Just look for the destination sign in the front window. Payment is made in cash upon entering.
The main departure point for most services, including the popular route up to Boztepe Hill, is near the central square (Meydan).
City Buses: Trabzon has a local bus service (Trabzon Belediyesi Otobüsleri), which is great for moving between key points in the city. You’ll need a reloadable transport card (often called Trabzon Kart or similar) to use them.
From the Airport: Trabzon Airport (TZX) is very close to the city center. You can take a taxi for a quick ride, or use the Havaş airport bus service, which runs from the airport to the city center (Meydan).
Embrace the Black Sea Cuisine: The region’s food is distinct from the rest of Turkey.
Hamsi (Anchovies): A staple food. Try them baked, fried, or in rice (Hamsili Pilav).

Black Cabbage (Kara Lahana): Used in soups (Kara Lahana Çorbası) and stuffed dishes.
Mısır Ekmeği (Cornbread): The local bread, often denser and sweeter than white bread.
Respect at Religious Sites: When visiting mosques or the Hagia Sophia, dress modestly. Women should cover their heads, shoulders, and knees. Scarves are often provided at the entrance, but it’s best to carry your own. Be mindful of prayer times, as tourist access may be restricted.
Tea Culture is King: This region, due to its climate, is a major tea-growing area, particularly Rize, which is nearby. Expect to be offered tea (or çay) everywhere. It’s a sign of hospitality and a way of life—enjoy a glass or two!
The Weather is Unpredictable: As a coastal city nestled against mountains, the weather on the Black Sea coast can change rapidly. It’s often humid and sees more rainfall than the Mediterranean or Aegean coasts. Bring layers and a waterproof jacket, even in summer.
