Local Tips & Transport
Fly-in Safari is Standard: The most common and convenient way to get to Timbavati is via a scheduled flight (or private charter) from Johannesburg (JNB) directly to one of the nearby airstrips, such as Hoedspruit Eastgate Airport (HDS). Lodges will arrange transfers from the airport, which often double as a short game drive.
Self-Drive Access: You can drive from Johannesburg (approx. 6 hours), but this is not recommended unless you are combining Timbavati with other regions like the Panorama Route. Once inside the reserve, you must adhere to strict speed limits, and only lodge-owned safari vehicles are allowed on the off-road tracking routes.
Internal Lodge Transport: During your stay, all transport is handled by your lodge’s dedicated, open-air safari vehicles (4×4 Land Rovers or similar). You are generally not permitted to drive yourself within the reserve after check-in.
The Big Five and More: Timbavati is part of the Greater Kruger National Park ecosystem (unfenced), meaning animals roam freely. While seeing the Big Five is common, remember that sightings are a privilege, not a guarantee.
Tipping Etiquette: Tipping is customary and essential for staff in South Africa. The standard for your dedicated Ranger/Guide and Tracker team is typically R250–R500 per guest, per day (shared between the two), and for general lodge staff (housekeepers, waiters) around R100–R200 per guest, per day. Cash is preferred.
“Safari Time”: Days start very early! Expect a wake-up call between 5:00 AM and 5:30 AM for the morning game drive, as this is when animals are most active. The schedule is fixed around the animals’ activity patterns.
Dress Code: Layers and Neutrals: Dress in neutral colours (khaki, brown, green, beige) to blend into the environment. The temperature can fluctuate wildly—be prepared for a freezing morning drive (hats, gloves, scarves are essential, even in summer) and a very hot midday.
Water and Safety: Always drink bottled water provided by the lodge. Do not walk outside of your lodge room/tent at night without a security escort; wildlife roams freely, even inside the camp perimeter.
Gate Times and Fees: The reserve gates have strict opening and closing times. If self-driving, be aware of the gate closing hours and always carry cash to pay the mandatory Conservation/Entrance Fee (often called the Timbavati Gate Fee), which is charged per person and per vehicle.
Hidden Gems:
- The Klaserie River: This river runs through a section of the Timbavati and is a magnet for wildlife during the dry season, offering excellent viewing opportunities.
- The Rare White Lions: Unlike in zoos, tracking the free-roaming, naturally occurring White Lions in their original home is a deeply special experience unique to this reserve.
- Starlink/Wi-Fi: While many lodges now offer satellite internet access, consider disconnecting during your game drives to fully immerse yourself in the sounds and sights of the bush.
