THE LYCIAN WAY
The Lycian Way is a spectacular long-distance trail following the ancient coast of Lycian Turkey. It is a glorious fusion of dramatic coastal views, rugged mountain scenery, and the echoes of millennia of history.
This ancient path weaves through the ruins of Roman and Lycian cities, passing stunning beaches and charming villages. It is a challenging but uniquely rewarding journey through one of the Mediterranean’s most beautiful landscapes.

Local Tips & Transport
Flying In: The two main airports for accessing the trail are Dalaman (DLM) for the western (Fethiye) end, and Antalya (AYT) for the eastern end. Direct transfers (private or pre-booked shared shuttles) or local buses (Havaş/Muttaş) can take you to the starting/end points.
Inter-city Buses (Dolmuş): The local minibus network, known as Dolmuş, is essential for access. These run frequently between major towns (Fethiye, Kaş, Demre, Finike, Kumluca) and to many villages along the route, making it possible to complete smaller sections.
Private Transfers: For more remote trailheads, or if you prefer a seamless connection between your accommodation and the trail, pre-arranging a private transfer or a taxi is recommended, especially for early morning starts.
Luggage Transfer Services: For trekkers who do not wish to carry a heavy pack every day, several local companies offer daily luggage transfer services, moving your bag from one pre-booked accommodation to the next.
Ferries and Boat Taxis: For specific coastal locations like Butterfly Valley or to cross the bay to the Sunken City of Kekova, boat travel is a scenic and often necessary option.
Best Time to Hike: The prime seasons are Spring (April-May) for cooler temperatures and wildflowers, and Autumn (September-October) for pleasant warmth after the summer heat. Avoid July and August, when temperatures can be dangerously high.
Water is Crucial: Water sources (natural springs, wells, taps) are marked on most trail maps and apps, but they can be unreliable or dry, especially in late summer/autumn. Always carry at least 3-4 liters of water per person, particularly on longer sections.
Navigation & Markers: The trail is marked with red and white stripes (following the Grande Randonnée system). While generally well-marked, signs can be sparse in some areas. Always carry an offline GPS map/app (like TrailSmart or Gaia GPS) and a compass as a backup.
Accommodation: Pensions & Pansiyons: Many small villages along the route offer traditional family-run guesthouses (Pansiyons). These often include generous homemade breakfast and dinner, providing a wonderful local and affordable cultural experience.
Cash is King in Villages: While larger towns (Kaş, Fethiye, Antalya) accept cards, most small villages, guesthouses, and market stalls on the trail only accept Turkish Lira (TL) cash. Withdraw a sufficient amount in major towns before heading out.
Respect the Environment and Culture: The Lycian Way is a protected area. Follow “Leave No Trace” principles. When passing through villages, dress modestly, especially when entering mosques or family-run properties. Saying basic Turkish phrases like Merhaba (hello) and Teşekkürler (thank you) is always appreciated.
Hidden Gems (Beyond the Trail):
- The Theatre at Myra (Demre): A magnificent Roman theatre carved into a hillside, close to impressive rock-cut Lycian tombs.
- Saklıkent Gorge: A short detour from the Fethiye/Patara section, this deep, narrow canyon is a fantastic place to wade through icy water for a refreshing change of pace.
- Üçağız (Kaleköy): A picturesque, slow-paced village with a hilltop castle and local restaurants, serving as a great base for boat trips to Kekova.
