THE GARDEN ROUTE TOWNS

The Garden Route is a stretch of South Africa’s southern coast renowned for its breathtaking natural beauty. It’s a harmonious blend of pristine beaches, indigenous forests, and serene lagoons, creating a vibrant outdoor paradise.

This iconic route links charming towns, each offering a unique character—from Mossel Bay’s maritime history to Plettenberg Bay’s glamorous coastline. It is a destination defined by adventure, biodiversity, and stunning scenic drives.

Coastal and Maritime Heritage (Mossel Bay & Surrounds):

  • Cape St. Blaize Lighthouse: A working lighthouse offering spectacular views and marking the southern tip of the bay.

  • Bartolomeu Dias Museum Complex: Home to the Maritime Museum, featuring a replica of the Dias Caravel, and the Shell Museum.

  • Mossel Bay Harbour: A bustling port offering fishing charters, boat trips, and views of the bay.

  • Pinnacle Point Caves: An archaeological site containing some of the earliest evidence of modern human behavior.

Forests, Mountains & Natural Wonders (George & Knysna):

  • Outeniqua Transport Museum (George): Showcasing a vast collection of steam locomotives and vintage coaches.

  • Montagu Pass: A stunning, historic, and winding gravel pass through the Outeniqua Mountains, a national monument.

  • Knysna Heads: Two massive sandstone cliffs guarding the entrance to the Knysna Lagoon, offering dramatic viewpoints.

  • Knysna Lagoon: A large, scenic estuary perfect for boat cruises, oyster tasting, and watersports.

  • Knysna Forest: Part of the greater Tsitsikamma forest, known for its majestic ancient yellowwood trees and hiking trails.

  • Harkerville Forest: Featuring popular mountain biking and hiking trails, including the challenging Kranshoek coastal route.

  • Wilderness National Park: Known for its tranquil lakes, estuaries, and beautiful coastal hiking, like the Kingfisher Trail.

Wildlife and Adventure Activities (Plettenberg Bay & Surrounds):

  • Robberg Nature Reserve: A spectacular peninsula and national monument offering excellent hiking, ancient caves, and views of Cape fur seals.

  • Plettenberg Bay Beaches (e.g., Central, Robberg 5, Lookout): Famous for their long, sandy stretches, calm swimming, and Blue Flag status.

  • Keurbooms River Nature Reserve: Ideal for canoeing, boat trips, and birdwatching along the pristine Keurbooms River and estuary.

  • Birds of Eden: The world’s largest free-flight aviary, housing over 200 species of birds.

  • Monkeyland Primate Sanctuary: A multi-species free-roaming sanctuary for various primates.

  • Jukani Wildlife Sanctuary: Focuses on rescuing and rehabilitating large carnivores.

  • Tenikwa Wildlife Awareness Centre: Offering close encounters and educational experiences with local wild cats.

  • Tsitsikamma National Park (Near Plett): Famous for the Storms River Mouth Suspension Bridge and the start of the Otter Trail.

Local Culture and Unique Experiences:

  • Thesen Island (Knysna): A waterfront development with restaurants, shops, and boutique accommodation, linked to the mainland by a bridge.

  • Victoria Bay: A small, picturesque cove known for its excellent surf spot and sheltered beach.

Hike the Otter Trail in Tsitsikamma National Park: Tackle one of South Africa’s most famous multi-day hikes, or opt for a scenic section like the mouth of the Storms River.

Explore the Cango Caves (near Oudtshoorn): Take a guided tour through the magnificent limestone caverns with their impressive dripstone formations.

Go Bungee Jumping or Ziplining at the Bloukrans Bridge: Experience the thrill of the world’s highest commercial bridge bungee jump or enjoy a less intense zipline slide.

Lagoon Cruise in Knysna: Take a leisurely boat trip on the Knysna Lagoon, passing by the iconic Knysna Heads, often including a stop for fresh oysters.

Visit a Sanctuary for Birds, Monkeys, or Elephants (Plett/Knysna): Interact with wildlife ethically at places like Monkeyland, Birds of Eden, or the Knysna Elephant Park.

Golf on a Championship Course in George: Play a round at one of the area’s world-renowned golf resorts, such as Fancourt, which is a major draw for the area.

Go Shark Cage Diving in Mossel Bay: Get up close with Great White Sharks in the chilly Atlantic waters (check seasonality and operator credentials).

Take a Surf Lesson on Buffalo Bay or Plettenberg Bay: Learn to ride the waves at one of the region’s accessible and beautiful beaches.

Walk with a View at Robberg Nature Reserve (Plettenberg Bay): Hike the stunning coastal reserve, known for its dramatic cliffs, ancient rock formations, and views of seals and whales.

Visit the Post Office Tree and Museum in Mossel Bay: Discover the historical starting point of European exploration in the region and send a postcard from the famous tree.

Car is Essential: The name “Garden Route” implies a scenic drive, and a rental car is the single most important form of transport to properly explore the scattered towns, beaches, forests, and reserves. The main N2 highway connects the towns efficiently.

Limited Public Transport: Public transport between towns is almost non-existent for tourists. Mini-bus taxis operate but are not recommended for general tourist use. Intercape and Greyhound buses connect the major towns but are for long-distance travel.

Airports: The George Airport (GRJ) is the main gateway, with daily flights to major South African cities (Cape Town, Johannesburg). This is the best starting point for a self-drive tour.

Taxis/Ride-Sharing: Taxis are available in the major towns (Knysna, George, Plett), but ride-sharing apps are generally not widely used or reliable outside of the largest city, George. Arrange transport with your accommodation or a reputable local taxi service.

The Weather Split: The Garden Route has a unique climate. It is known as the “all-year-round” destination due to the fact that it’s generally drier in summer than the Western Cape, but the Knysna/Plett area is notably warmer and wetter than the Mossel Bay/George side, which is influenced by the drier Karoo.

Oyster Capital: Knysna is the oyster capital of South Africa. Don’t leave without sampling the local lagoon oysters—they are highly prized. The Knysna Oyster Festival in July is a massive annual event.

Seasonal Whale & Dolphin Watching: From June to November, the coastline is a prime spot for viewing the Southern Right Whale and Humpback Whale migration. Book a boat trip or simply watch from a vantage point at Robberg or the Knysna Heads.

Peak Season: The absolute peak season is the South African summer (mid-December to mid-January). Towns like Plettenberg Bay and Knysna become extremely busy, accommodations book out months in advance, and prices are at their highest. Plan accordingly.

Safety & Swimming: While the beaches are beautiful, the Indian Ocean can have strong currents, especially on the more exposed beaches. Always swim where there are lifeguards and pay attention to warning flags. Shark activity is present, particularly in the Mossel Bay area, so be aware of local warnings.

Hidden Gems:

  • The Seven Passes Road (George to Knysna): A spectacular, historical alternative to the N2 highway. This gravel road takes you through indigenous forest, over seven historic bridges, and past beautiful farmlands.
  • Kaaimans River Lookout Point: Located near Wilderness, this spot offers a breathtaking view of the river mouth and the railway line arching over the water. Perfect for a quick photo stop.
  • Jubilee Creek (Knysna Forest): A gentle, beautiful walk through the Knysna forest to a small waterfall and swimming hole, perfect for a family picnic.
