Local Tips & Transport
Taxis and Private Transfers: This is the most comfortable and quickest way to travel from Bangkok to the region (approx. $57–$86 USD one-way). They are also available locally, though can be pricey for short trips.
Local Transport: Songthaews and Tuk-Tuks:
- Songthaews (pick-up trucks with two rows of seats) are the most common and cheapest form of local public transport. They run fixed routes, primarily along the main Phetkasem Road connecting Hua Hin and Cha-am, with fares starting around $0.30–$0.50 USD. You can wave them down.
- Tuk-Tuks and Motorcycle Taxis are widely available for shorter, point-to-point trips. Always negotiate the fare before you get in, as they generally charge tourists a higher price.
Bike/Motorbike Rentals: For freedom, especially in Cha-am, renting a scooter (motorbike) is an affordable option, typically under $8.50 USD per day. Ensure you have the appropriate license and wear a helmet.
Inter-City Travel (Train/Bus):
- The Train (State Railway of Thailand) is a slower but charming and very affordable option for travel to/from Bangkok, with different class carriages available.
- Public Buses and Minivans run frequent, inexpensive routes from Bangkok’s Southern Bus Terminal and also shuttle between Hua Hin and Cha-am.
Wai and Respect: The traditional Thai greeting is the Wai (a slight bow with hands pressed together). While not always necessary for tourists, using a Wai and saying “Sawasdee krap” (if male) or “Sawasdee ka” (if female) is always appreciated.
Royal Connection: Hua Hin is considered a royal resort town, as the Thai Royal Family maintains a residence here (Klai Kangwon Palace). Show extra respect to images and mentions of the Monarchy, and dress modestly (covering shoulders and knees) when visiting palaces or temples.
Beach Etiquette: Cha-am beach is especially popular with Thai families, particularly on weekends. It can be busier than Hua Hin. Beach chairs are often available for rent for a small fee.
Tipping Culture: Tipping is not mandatory but is certainly appreciated for good service. For taxis, round up the fare. For restaurants, 10% is generous, and small amounts can be left for massage therapists and hotel porters.
Bargaining: Bargaining is expected at markets (especially the Night Market) but is not typically done at large shopping malls or sit-down restaurants. Bargain with a smile and good humor.
Hidden Gems:
- Tamarind Market: Located near Cicada, this is a newer, less-crowded alternative on weekends with a great selection of food stalls and a chill, family-friendly atmosphere.
- Khao Hin Lek Fai Viewpoint: A fantastic and less-crowded viewpoint closer to Hua Hin center, offering panoramic city and ocean views.
- The Artists Village (Baan Sillapin): An art-themed community with galleries, studios, and shops selling unique local works.
