Local Tips & Transport
Walking the Strip: While the resorts look close, the distance between them is deceptively long. Wear comfortable shoes and plan your route. Free resort trams (connecting Excalibur/Luxor/Mandalay Bay and Bellagio/Aria/Park MGM) can help cover ground.
The Deuce Bus & SDX: The Deuce (double-decker bus) runs 24/7 along the Strip and to Downtown. The SDX (Strip & Downtown Express) is faster with fewer stops. Purchase 24-hour passes for easy travel.
Taxis/Rideshare: Rideshare apps are very popular and generally the quickest way to get between non-adjacent resorts. Look for designated “Rideshare Pick-up” areas, which are typically well-signed and sometimes located in the parking garages.
Monorail: The Las Vegas Monorail runs along the east side of the Strip, connecting resorts from MGM Grand to the SAHARA. It’s fast but doesn’t serve the west side resorts.
From the Airport: Taxis have a flat-rate zone system to the Strip/Downtown. Rideshares are also widely used; follow signs to the designated pick-up location in the parking garage.
Tipping Culture: Tipping is essential and expected for almost all service industry jobs, including casino dealers, bartenders, servers, taxi/rideshare drivers, and hotel staff.
Resort Fees: Nearly every hotel charges a mandatory Resort Fee per night, on top of the room rate. This fee covers things like Wi-Fi and pool access and is not optional. Always factor this into your budget.
The 24-Hour Culture: Things rarely close. You can get dinner, gamble, or shop at any hour. Plan your sleep schedule wisely!
Free Entertainment: Look for spectacular free shows and sights, such as the Bellagio Fountains, the Fall of Atlantis and Festival Fountain shows at Caesars Palace, and the Volcano at The Mirage (check for current operating status as the resort is being redeveloped).
Dress Code: While casual wear is fine for daytime activities, many upscale restaurants and nightclubs enforce a dress code (e.g., no shorts, baseball caps, or ripped jeans). Dress to impress for a night out.
Hidden Gems:
- The Griffin (Downtown): A dark, cozy bar with a roaring fireplace and a relaxed atmosphere, a great escape from the Strip’s energy.
- Pinball Hall of Fame (Near the Strip): A massive warehouse dedicated to working pinball and arcade machines from all eras—a fun, affordable, and interactive attraction.

Local Tips & Transport
Car is Essential: A rental car is mandatory for exploring Southern Nevada’s natural attractions, including Red Rock Canyon, Valley of Fire, and the Hoover Dam. Public transit options outside the main Las Vegas/Henderson area are virtually non-existent.
Gas Up: Fill your gas tank before heading out to remote areas like Valley of Fire, where services are limited.
Permits & Fees: Many natural parks, like Red Rock Canyon and Valley of Fire, charge an entrance fee, and some (like Red Rock during peak season) require a timed entry reservation—book this well in advance.
Driving Distances: While attractions seem close on a map, they can take longer than expected. Hoover Dam is about 45 minutes from the Strip, and Valley of Fire is about an hour.
Parking: In the national and state parks, parking is usually readily available, though busy in peak season. At the Hoover Dam, parking in the garages is the most convenient option.
Desert Safety & Hydration: The number one rule is to carry and drink copious amounts of water, especially during any outdoor activity. The desert climate is extremely dry, and temperatures in summer can be lethal. Do not hike alone.
Respect the Heat: From late spring through early fall, outdoor activities should be limited to the very early morning (sunrise) or late afternoon. Avoid hiking between 10 AM and 4 PM.
Time Zone Note: When visiting the Hoover Dam, you will be on the border of Nevada (Pacific Time) and Arizona (Mountain Time). Arizona (excluding the Navajo Nation) does not observe Daylight Saving Time, which can create temporary time differences during certain months. Be aware of your phone’s time settings.
