Try Surfing at Senggigi or the South Coast: While Senggigi offers manageable waves for beginners (especially during the wet season), experienced surfers should take a day trip to the bigger breaks on the South Coast (e.g., Gerupuk Bay). ($10-$20 for board rental, $30-$40 for a lesson)
Get a Traditional Sasak Massage: Enjoy a relaxing and therapeutic massage, often using coconut oil and traditional techniques, available at spas and beach huts throughout Senggigi. ($10-$25 per hour)

Local Tips & Transport
Private Drivers/Taxis: This is the most comfortable way to travel between the airport (LOP) and the West Coast, or for full-day excursions. Bluebird and other metered taxis are available, but local private drivers are abundant and can be booked via hotel or roadside. Always agree on the price beforehand if the taxi is unmetered or for long distances.
Motorbike/Scooter Rental: Scooters are the most common and flexible way to explore the West Coast and nearby areas like the Pusuk Pass. Helmets are mandatory and police checkpoints are frequent. ($5-$8 per day)
Bemos/Public Minibuses: These are the cheapest local option but can be slow, crowded, and involve frequent stops. They operate on set routes, mainly connecting Mataram/Lembar to Senggigi and the northern harbors.
Getting to the Gili Islands: The fastest way is via a private speedboat from Teluk Nare (5-10 min trip), but the cheapest is the public boat from Bangsal Harbor (20-30 min trip). Avoid touts at Bangsal and go directly to the official ticket counter.
Renting a Car: While available, self-driving can be challenging due to road conditions and unfamiliar traffic laws. A driver is highly recommended for cross-island trips.
Lombok is “The Island of 1000 Mosques”: Lombok is predominantly Muslim (unlike Bali, which is Hindu). Be aware of the call to prayer (Adhan), which you will hear several times a day, sometimes very early in the morning.
Dress Code: While swimsuits are fine on the beach and in resort areas, dress respectfully when outside tourist zones, especially when visiting local villages, markets, or religious sites. This means covering shoulders and knees.
Haggling in Markets: When purchasing souvenirs, clothing, or hiring local transport, haggling is expected. Start with a price you’re comfortable with, and aim to settle at around 60-70% of the vendor’s opening price. Be friendly and respectful.
Money & Currency: The local currency is the Indonesian Rupiah (IDR). ATMs are widely available in Senggigi and Mataram. Credit cards are accepted in major hotels and restaurants, but always carry small denominations of IDR for markets, local transport, and tips.
The Sasak People: The indigenous people of Lombok are the Sasak. They have a distinct culture, dialect, and traditions. Learning a few words of the local language (‘Terima Kasih’ – Thank you) will be greatly appreciated.
Hidden Gems:
- The Art Market (Pasar Seni) in Senggigi: A great place to shop for wood carvings, textiles (Songket), and other handicrafts, though bargaining is necessary.
- Pura Lingsar: Located near Mataram, this is a unique and important Hindu and Wektu Telu (local Lombok faith) temple complex where members of both faiths come to worship.
- Nasi Balap Puyung: This extremely spicy local rice dish, originating from the village of Puyung, is a must-try for food adventurers. Look for local roadside stalls or restaurants serving it.
- The Black Sand Beaches: The beaches around Senggigi, while beautiful, are known for their striking dark volcanic sand, a distinct contrast to the white sands of the Gili Islands.
