Stargaze in a Dark Sky Reserve: The remote location and lack of light pollution make the region an excellent spot for amateur astronomy and appreciating the night sky.
Go Birdwatching and Wildlife Spotting: The area is home to unique high-mountain and riparian ecosystems, offering opportunities to spot chamois, eagles, and various aquatic birds.
Take a Scenic Drive to Puerto de Cotos: Enjoy the winding mountain roads and stunning views, stopping at various viewpoints and starting points for hikes.

Local Tips & Transport
Car is Essential: Accessing the various starting points for the Siete Lagos hikes and moving between the remote villages is only practical with a rental car. Public transport into the high-mountain areas is extremely limited.
Parking Restrictions: During peak seasons (especially summer weekends and holidays), access roads to the major trailheads, like the one near the Peñalara area, may have limited parking or require pre-booking. Arrive early to secure a spot.
Mountain Roads: Be prepared for winding, narrow, and sometimes steep mountain roads. Drive cautiously, especially in adverse weather or low visibility conditions.
Limited Services: Outside of the main towns, gas stations and mechanical services are scarce. Ensure your vehicle is fueled and in good condition before setting off on long drives.
Respect the Altitude and Weather: The lakes are at high altitudes, meaning the weather can change rapidly. Always pack layers, including a waterproof/windproof jacket, even in summer. Check the forecast before setting out.
Leave No Trace: The region is a protected natural park with fragile ecosystems. Stick to marked trails, pack out all your trash, and do not disturb the wildlife or vegetation.
Hiking Preparation: Even seemingly short hikes can be challenging. Wear appropriate hiking boots (the terrain is rocky and uneven), carry plenty of water, and use sun protection (sunscreen and a hat).
Dining is Hearty: The local cuisine in the wider region is known for its warming, substantial dishes, perfect after a long day of hiking. Look for cocido (a rich stew), Leonese cured meats (like cecina), and local trout.
Siesta Hours: Like the rest of Spain, smaller villages and businesses will strictly observe siesta hours (roughly 2 PM to 5 PM). Plan to have lunch early or pack a picnic, and save souvenir shopping for the evening.
Hidden Gems:
- The “Tejedelo” Forest: An ancient, enchanting forest of yew trees near the village of Requejo de Sanabria, offering a mystical and less-trodden hiking experience.
- The Sierra de la Culebra: While primarily known for wolves, this nearby range offers rugged, remote scenery for experienced hikers seeking solitude.
- Local Cheese and Wine: Seek out local artisanal goat and cow cheeses and the excellent regional wines from the Bierzo or Tierra de León denominations.
- The Glacial Moraines: Keep an eye out for the distinct geological features like moraines and polished rock surfaces, which are evidence of the powerful glaciers that carved the landscape.
