Visit a Local Public Market: Immerse yourself in the local culture by visiting the lively public market in Donsol proper to see (and try) fresh local produce, seafood, and Bicolano snacks.

From Legazpi Airport (LGP): Legazpi is the nearest major transport hub. A private van or car transfer to Donsol (about a 1.5 to 2-hour drive) costs approximately $27–50 USD. Public air-conditioned vans or jeepneys are the most affordable option, departing from the Legazpi Grand Central Terminal.

Tricycles are King: For short trips within Donsol, the motorized tricycle is the main mode of transport. The fare from Donsol town center to the Whale Shark Interaction Center (in Barangay Dancalan) should be around $1 USD per person or $1.75–2 USD for a “special ride” (private, no other passengers). Always agree on the fare before the ride.

Jeepneys and Vans for Longer Distances: For travel between Donsol and nearby towns like Pilar (for Masbate ferry connections) or Legazpi, use the colorful public jeepneys or minivans, which are the cheapest options but leave when full.

Motorcycle/Scooter Rental: You can rent a scooter in town for around $7–10 USD per day, which offers the most flexibility for exploring the wider area and different waterfalls.

No ATM Reliance: Donsol has very few ATMs, and they are often unreliable or do not accept international cards. Bring enough cash (Philippine Pesos) in USD to last your entire trip, including for your accommodation, tours, and food.

Whale Shark Season: The best time for whale shark sightings is generally from February to May, though the season runs from November to June. Plan to go on the earliest morning trip (around 7:30 AM) for the best chance of spotting them with fewer boats.

Ethical Ecotourism: Donsol is committed to a non-baiting, sustainable approach (unlike some other Philippine spots). You are discouraged from touching or getting too close to the whale sharks. All interactions are monitored by a Butanding Interaction Officer (BIO).

Cash is Essential: Most resorts, local restaurants, and tour operators outside the main Visitor Center do not accept credit cards. See the Transport note above—plan to bring all necessary cash with you.

Bicolano Cuisine: Don’t leave without trying the local Bicolano food, which is characterized by the use of coconut milk (gata) and chili (sili). Must-try dishes include Bicol Express (pork stewed in coconut milk and chilies) and Laing (taro leaves simmered in coconut milk).

The Mayon View: While in Donsol, you may catch a breathtaking view of the iconic Mayon Volcano in the distance, especially from the whale shark boat. It’s an iconic photo opportunity.

Local Language: The local language is Bicolano, but almost everyone involved in tourism, and many locals, speak excellent English. Learning a few simple Tagalog or Bicolano phrases is still appreciated.
