Local Buses & Taxis: Ooty, Coonoor, and Kotagiri are connected by an extensive and affordable public bus network. For local sightseeing, pre-paid taxis or hired private cars are the most comfortable option, especially for groups.
Auto-rickshaws: Auto-rickshaws are available for short distances within the main towns. Always agree on the fare before starting your journey, as meters are rarely used by tourists.
Walking & Hiking: The hill station towns are generally walkable, especially the central market areas. For the numerous viewpoints and peaks, you will need vehicular transport or a dedicated, guided hike.
Climate & Clothing: Ooty is pleasant but can get chilly, especially from November to February. Always carry light woolens, a jacket, or a shawl, even in the summer months (daytime is warm, but evenings are cool).
Tea Culture: Nilgiri tea is less malty and more bright and fragrant than Assam tea. Be sure to try a fresh brew at a local estate. Look out for the locally produced homemade chocolates, a popular Ooty specialty.
Respecting the Toda: The indigenous Toda people are generally private. If visiting a settlement, do so with a reputable guide and never take photos without explicit permission, especially of the sacred ‘dairy-temples’.
Dining Times: Unlike some major metros, dining times are generally in line with Indian standard times: Lunch is typically 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM, and dinner is 8:00 PM to 10:00 PM. Local restaurants often offer delicious South Indian thalis and North Indian dishes.
Language: Tamil is the primary language, but due to the area’s history and tourism, many people, especially in hotels and major attractions, speak English and occasionally Hindi. Learning a few basic Tamil phrases like Vannakkam (Hello/Greetings) is appreciated.
