Local Tips & Transport
Getting There: The Journey is an Adventure: Jeri is intentionally difficult to reach to preserve its environment. The most common route is to fly into the nearest airport (Jijoca de Jericoacoara – JJD or Fortaleza – FOR), and from there, a mandatory transfer is required, usually an air-conditioned 4×4 or Jardineira (large 4×4 truck) that handles the final stretch of sand dunes.
No Cars in the Village: Once you arrive, the entire village is a pedestrian zone. The sandy streets are car-free, and you will walk everywhere. This is part of the charm!
Local Taxis – The Jardineiras: For longer trips outside the village (like to the lagoons or Pedra Furada), you must hire a local buggy or a Jardineira. Only licensed drivers are permitted to navigate the surrounding National Park.
Buggy Safety: Always book your buggy tours with licensed operators and, if possible, specify you want a “buggy com emoção” (with excitement/dune surfing) or “buggy sem emoção” (without excitement/relaxed drive).
Cash is King (Sometimes): While many restaurants and hotels accept cards, especially in the main tourist area, smaller local barracas (shacks) and vendors, particularly out by the lagoons, often only accept cash (Brazilian Reals – R$) or PIX (Brazil’s instant payment system, if you have a local bank account). Always carry some cash.
Embrace the Sand: Jeri’s streets are pure sand. Leave your fancy shoes and heels at home. Flip-flops (locals call them chinelos) are the only practical footwear. You will be shaking sand out of your bags for weeks!
The Forró Vibe: Forró is the traditional dance of Brazil’s Northeast. You will hear it everywhere. On weekend nights, check out the local venues for an authentic Forró dance party—it’s very beginner-friendly.
Sunset Time is Sacred: The village shuts down a little before sunset as everyone migrates to the Dune do Pôr do Sol. This ritual is mandatory. After the sun dips, follow the crowds back to the main beach where the nightly capoeira performance takes place.

- “Beco Doce” (Sweet Alley): This small alley near the main street is where many of the best local food stands pop up in the evening, selling everything from tapioca crepes to fresh juices.

Protect the Park: Jeri is part of a National Park. Follow all park rules, only use licensed guides, and always take your trash with you. The preservation fee is collected to maintain the park and the village infrastructure.
Language: The local language is Portuguese. While some people in the main hotels and tour companies speak a little English, learning basic phrases (Oi, Obrigado/Obrigada, Por favor) is highly recommended and greatly appreciated.
