Local Tips & Transport
The Gateway is Labuan Bajo: The main hub and starting point for all trips into the National Park is the town of Labuan Bajo on the island of Flores (LBJ – Komodo International Airport).
Boats are the Only Way to the Park: The Komodo National Park consists of multiple islands and is only accessible by boat.
- Day Tours: Use speedboats for a fast-paced day trip covering the highlights (Padar, Komodo/Rinca, Manta Point).
- Multi-Day Tours: Opt for a traditional wooden boat (phinisi or similar) for a more relaxed, budget-friendly, or luxury multi-day experience.
- Liveaboards: For divers or those seeking an in-depth exploration, Liveaboard Cruises are the best option, allowing you to sleep in the heart of the park.
Getting Around Labuan Bajo: The town is small and walkable, especially the main harbor area. For longer distances, you can use local taxis, ride-sharing apps like Gojek/Grab (limited availability), or rent a scooter (ensure you have an International Driving Permit).
Airport Transfer: Komodo International Airport (LBJ) is very close to the town center (approx. 1.5km), making a taxi or a quick ride-share an easy transfer option to your accommodation.
Komodo Dragon Safety: Never wander alone on the dragon islands (Komodo, Rinca). It is mandatory to be accompanied by a park ranger carrying a forked wooden stick for safety. Always follow the ranger’s instructions and maintain a safe distance.
Dry vs. Rainy Season: The Dry Season (April to November) offers the best overall weather with calmer seas, which is ideal for sailing and general activities. The Rainy Season (December to March) can bring rougher seas and higher chances of tour cancellations, but is often considered the peak time for seeing Manta Rays.
Pack Light, Be Hydrated: The tropical heat is intense. Wear light, breathable, and sun-protective clothing (long sleeves/pants for treks), sturdy walking shoes, and a hat. Carry plenty of water—facilities for purchasing supplies are scarce to non-existent within the park.
Protect the Marine Life: The park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site with exceptionally vulnerable coral reefs. Never touch the coral or marine life. Use reef-friendly sunscreen to avoid damaging the ecosystem. Fins are discouraged for snorkelers in very shallow areas to prevent coral damage.
Language and Currency: The local currency is the Indonesian Rupiah (IDR), but all tours from Labuan Bajo are widely priced and marketed in USD. While English is spoken by guides and in hotels, the local language is Indonesian (Bahasa Indonesia).
Hidden Gems (Around Labuan Bajo):
- Cunca Wulang Waterfall: A beautiful river canyon and waterfall about 1.5-2 hours drive from Labuan Bajo, offering natural pools for swimming.
- Sebayur Island: A less-visited island closer to the park’s heart, known for a resort and excellent house reefs, a great alternative to the main Labuan Bajo hub.
- Sunset Spot at Paradise Bar: A popular spot in Labuan Bajo town to enjoy drinks with a view overlooking the harbor and the islands at sunset.
