Local Tips & Transport
Car Rental is Highly Recommended: Given that the main attractions and best beaches are spread across the island, a rental car provides the necessary freedom and flexibility to explore at your own pace.
Traffic: Be prepared for heavy traffic during peak summer season (December–February) and during the mid-day commute, especially around the bridges connecting the island to the mainland.
Parking: Finding parking near the most popular beaches can be challenging and sometimes requires paid street parking (often managed by a rotating volunteer system called “Zona Azul”).
Buses: Florianópolis has an integrated public bus system. The main hub is TICEN (Terminal de Integração do Centro), where you can change buses to reach different neighborhoods and beaches.
The system is efficient for connecting main terminals but can be slow due to traffic. A single fare allows you to transfer within the terminal.
Ride-Sharing & Taxis: Services like Uber and local taxis are widely available, particularly in the city center and more popular areas like Lagoa da Conceição and Jurerê. They are a good option for night travel or short distances but can be costly and prone to surge pricing during high season.
From the Airport: The Hercílio Luz International Airport (FLN) is on the island. The most convenient way to reach your accommodation is via taxi or ride-share. There is also a bus line connecting the airport to TICEN.
Embrace the Island Vibe: Floripa, as it’s locally known, is a relaxed, beach-centric city. Things tend to move at a slower pace. The culture is a unique mix of modern Brazilian beach lifestyle and traditional Azorean heritage (especially in the south).
Dining and Bar Time: Lunch is typically eaten between 12:30 PM and 2:30 PM. Dinner is generally later, starting around 8:00 PM or 9:00 PM, especially in the more lively areas. Rodízios (all-you-can-eat formats, especially for sushi or pizza) are very popular.
Oyster Culture: A huge part of the local gastronomy, particularly in Ribeirão da Ilha and Sambaqui. Locals are passionate about eating them raw, often with a squeeze of lemon or in unique preparations like gratinated with cheese.
Language: The official language is Portuguese. While English is spoken in major hotels and tourist spots, learning a few phrases will greatly enhance your experience. Brazilian Portuguese is the norm—Olá (Hello), Obrigado/Obrigada (Thank you – gendered), and Por favor (Please).
Peak Season (Avoid the Rush): The high season is from mid-December to Carnival (usually February). Prices increase significantly, accommodation is scarce, and traffic is intense. The shoulder seasons (March-May and September-November) offer great weather, fewer crowds, and lower prices.
Hidden Gems:
Praia do Matadeiro: Accessible only by a short trail, this beach maintains a rustic, untouched feel and is popular with local surfers.
Avenida das Rendeiras, Lagoa da Conceição: Watch the local women (known as Rendeiras) practice the Azorean tradition of lacemaking (Renda de Bilro). You can purchase unique handmade items here.
Santo Antônio de Lisboa: Another picturesque Azorean village, perfect for a sunset dinner with views of the mainland, less touristy than Ribeirão da Ilha.
Mercado Público (Public Market): Located in the city center, this market is a great spot to sample local delicacies, find fresh seafood, and enjoy a lively atmosphere, especially in the bar/restaurant area.
