Local Tips & Transport
4×4 Vehicle is Essential: While the main Highway 34 (Costanera) is paved and smooth, most villas, viewpoints, and Highland lodges are located up steep, unpaved gravel roads. A 4WD vehicle is highly recommended.
Mind the “Platabanda” (Road Shoulders): On mountain roads leading to the Highlands, shoulders can be narrow or non-existent. Drive cautiously, especially during heavy rain or fog.
Public Buses (Tracopa):
- Main Route: Large, comfortable buses run from San José to Uvita/Dominical daily.
- The “Cerro” Route: For the Highlands, buses heading toward Pérez Zeledón can drop you at the entrance to San Gerardo de Dota (km 80), but you’ll need a pre-arranged shuttle to get down into the valley.
The Coastal Highway: The Costanera Sur is one of the most scenic drives in the country. Watch for wildlife crossings (monkeys and sloths) and “Cedas” (yield signs) at one-lane bridges.
Domestic Flights: For a quicker trip, fly from San José to Quepos or Palmar Sur via Sansa Airlines, then take a private shuttle to the Whale Coast.
Pack for Two Climates: This subregion covers “Fire and Ice.” You will need swimwear and flip-flops for the Whale Coast (30°C+) and a heavy fleece, warm socks, and a raincoat for the Highland Clouds, where temperatures can drop to 5°C at night.
Tico Time vs. Nature’s Time: While “Tico Time” (a relaxed approach to punctuality) is real, nature doesn’t wait. Wildlife is most active at 5:30 AM. If you want to see birds or whales, start your day at sunrise.
The “Pura Vida” Philosophy: You’ll hear this everywhere. It’s a greeting, a goodbye, and a way of saying “it’s all good.” Embrace the slow pace; service in rural sodas (local restaurants) is meant to be enjoyed, not rushed.
Highland “Sodas”: In the mountains, look for Sodas serving Casados (traditional plates) with fresh blackberry juice (mora)—the region is famous for its berries.
Hidden Gems:
- The Whale Tail at Low Tide: You can only walk out onto the famous sandbar at Marino Ballena during low tide. Check the tide charts daily, or you’ll find the “tail” underwater.
- Providencia Village: Near San Gerardo de Dota, this tiny community offers a glimpse into rural mountain life, with artisanal cheese making and hidden waterfalls.
- Playa Arco: A secluded beach inside the national park that requires a hike through the jungle. It features a secret cave and is often completely empty.
- The Stone Spheres of Diquís: A short drive south to Palmar Sur lets you see these mysterious, perfectly round pre-Columbian stones, a UNESCO World Heritage site.
Respect the Rip Currents: The South Pacific beaches are beautiful but powerful. Always swim where others are present and look for red flags indicating dangerous currents.
Language: “Upe!” is a local way of knocking on a door or calling out to see if anyone is home in rural areas. While English is common in tourist hubs, Spanish is the heart of the Highlands.
