Local Tips & Transport
The Estuary Divide: While they look close on a map, the Tamarindo Estuary separates the two towns. To get from one to the other, use the small taxi boats (pangas) during the day. Do not swim across due to strong currents and crocodiles.
Walking vs. Driving: Tamarindo is highly walkable and compact. However, Playa Grande is spread out and residential; having a rental car (4×4 recommended) or a golf cart is essential if you are staying on the Grande side.
Shuttles and Buses: For arrival, “Interbus” or “Gray Line” offer reliable shared shuttles from Liberia (LIR) or San José (SJO) airports. There is a “Sintra” public bus that runs frequently between Tamarindo and neighboring Santa Cruz or Liberia.
Golf Carts: This is the most popular way to get around Tamarindo. They are easy to park and perfect for the dusty backroads, but be sure to lock them securely.
Taxis & Rideshare: “Red Taxis” (official) are plentiful in Tamarindo. While Uber exists, it is less reliable in the Guanacaste region than in the city, so have a local taxi number handy.
The “Pura Vida” Pace: You will hear “Pura Vida” (Pure Life) everywhere. It’s a greeting, a goodbye, and a philosophy. Don’t be surprised if service at restaurants is slower than you’re used to—relax and enjoy the view.
Tamarindo vs. Grande Vibes: Tamarindo (often called “Tamagringo”) is bustling, loud, and full of nightlife. Playa Grande is a quiet, eco-sensitive community within a National Park. Choose your “home base” based on whether you want a party or peace.
Sun Safety: Being so close to the equator, the sun is incredibly strong. Apply sunscreen frequently, and try to stay in the shade between 11 AM and 2 PM.
Wildlife Etiquette: Monkeys and iguanas are common sights. Please never feed the wildlife, as it disrupts their natural diet and can make them aggressive toward humans.
Water Safety: Both beaches are famous for surfing, which means they have rip currents. Always observe the water before jumping in, and if caught in a rip, swim parallel to the shore.
Hidden Gems:
- Pangas Beach Club: Located at the far end of Tamarindo beach, it offers a quieter, upscale atmosphere for a sunset drink away from the central crowds.
- The Carbonera Trail: A lesser-known hiking path in Playa Grande that offers elevated views of the entire bay and excellent birdwatching.
- Black Stallion Eco Park: Just a few minutes inland, this ranch offers a “BBQ and Zipline” night that feels world’s away from the touristy beach strip.
- Playa Ventanas: A short walk north from Playa Grande leads you to this stunning, often empty beach with turquoise waters and unique rock formations.
Currency & Tipping: Both US Dollars and Costa Rican Colones are accepted everywhere. A 10% service charge is usually included in restaurant bills, but it is customary to leave an extra 5–10% for excellent service.
