Local Tips & Transport
The Metro is the Backbone: Medellín’s integrated public transport system is its pride. It includes the Metro (above-ground train), Metroplús (articulated buses), and the Metrocable (cable cars). It’s clean, safe, and efficient.
Buy a Civica Card: While you can buy single tickets, the rechargeable Cívica Card is essential for frequent use and offers better value. It can be used across the entire integrated system.
Metrocable is Sightseeing: The cable car lines (Metrocable) were built to connect the high-altitude comunas (neighborhoods) to the rest of the city. Riding them is both transport and a prime way to see the city and surrounding mountains.
Taxis and Ride-Sharing: Taxis are abundant and relatively cheap. Ensure the driver uses the meter (“con taxímetro”) or negotiate a flat rate beforehand. Ride-sharing apps are widely used and often preferred for clear pricing and security.
From the Airport: José María Córdova International Airport (MDE) is actually located in the neighboring town of Rionegro. The best options to the city are an airport bus (quick and cheap) or a fixed-rate taxi/ride-share, which takes 45 minutes to an hour depending on traffic.
The Land of Eternal Spring: Medellín’s climate is famously mild and stable year-round, typically hovering between 20ºC and 28ºC (68ºF and 82ºF). Rain showers are common, so always carry a light jacket or umbrella, but you won’t experience extreme heat or cold.
The Paisa Culture: The people from the Antioquia region are called Paisas. They are known for their strong entrepreneurial spirit, warm hospitality, and regional pride. They speak a distinctive, often fast, and melodious Spanish dialect.
Dining Times: Lunch (Almuerzo) is the most important meal of the day, often eaten between 12:30 PM and 2:30 PM. Dinner is lighter and eaten later, usually starting after 7:30 PM. Many restaurants offer an Ejecutivo (set lunch menu) which is great value.
Safety Awareness: While Medellín has transformed significantly, general urban precautions apply. In busy areas like El Centro, be highly aware of your surroundings and keep valuables (especially cell phones) secured and out of sight. Avoid walking alone at night, especially in less-traveled areas.
