Local Tips & Transport
Grand Taxis: These shared, inter-city Mercedes taxis are a common and affordable way to travel between Ouarzazate, Skoura, and Aït Benhaddou. They leave when full and can be a crowded experience, but offer a glimpse into local life.
Rental Car: A rental car (preferably 4×4 for some off-road excursions) offers the most flexibility for exploring the remote villages, kasbahs, and the wider Draa Valley at your own pace.
Private Drivers: For comfort and convenience, you can easily hire a private taxi or driver for day trips from Ouarzazate or Marrakech. This is highly recommended for travel to and from the region.
Getting to Aït Benhaddou: The Ksar is off the main N9 road; the final 8km is a well-maintained road. From Ouarzazate, a shared grand taxi is the primary local option.
Dress Code & Respect: While less conservative than some parts of Morocco, remember this is a traditional, rural region. Both men and women should dress modestly, covering shoulders and knees out of respect, especially when visiting kasbahs or markets.
Haggling and Tipping: Bargaining is expected when buying artisan goods, especially in markets. For services like guides and drivers, a tip is appreciated—it is a significant part of their income.
Local Guides: At Aït Benhaddou and some major kasbahs, you will be approached by local guides. They can offer valuable historical and cultural context for a fair fee. Agree on the price before the tour starts.
Water Safety: Only drink bottled water. The intense desert heat, especially from June to September, requires constant hydration. Carry plenty of water, even for short walks.
Photography Etiquette: Always ask permission before taking a photo of a local person. Offer a small tip if they agree—this is respectful and customary.
The Architecture: The region is famous for its pre-Saharan earthen architecture. The kasbahs and ksour (plural of ksar) are made of mud and straw, which constantly requires maintenance due to rain and erosion. This architecture is a highlight of your visit.
Hidden Gems:
- Telouet Kasbah: While slightly further away on the old road to Marrakech, this stunning, partially ruined kasbah offers an amazing contrast between decay and the breathtaking, intact tilework and carving of the Pasha’s private chambers.
- The Salt Road (Tizi n’Tichka Pass): The dramatic, high-mountain road connecting Marrakech to Ouarzazate is an experience in itself, offering incredible vistas and the opportunity to stop for mint tea in Berber villages.
