This sanctuary is a haven for biodiversity, hosting migratory whales and rare wildlife. It offers a raw, untouched escape for those seeking nature’s most authentic and tranquil treasures.

Venture into Corcovado National Park: Take a boat from Puerto Jimenez to the Sirena station. It is often called “the most biologically intense place on Earth” by National Geographic.
Local Tips & Transport
Boats are the “Highways”: Because much of the gulf is surrounded by dense jungle with no road access, “lanchas” (small motorboats) are the primary mode of transport. Many eco-lodges include boat transfers from Puerto Jimenez or Golfito.
4WD is Mandatory: If you are driving on land, especially on the Osa Peninsula side, a 4×4 vehicle is essential. Roads are often unpaved and involve river crossings that can become impassable after heavy rain.
Flying In: To save a 6–8 hour drive from San José, take a domestic flight (Sansa) to the small landing strips in Puerto Jimenez or Golfito. The views of the gulf from the air are spectacular.
Taxis and Colectivos: In Puerto Jimenez, “colectivos” (shared trucks/buses) run on a loose schedule to Carate. Taxis are available but should be negotiated or booked in advance for remote pickups.
Embrace “Pura Vida”: You will hear this phrase constantly. It means “Pure Life” and reflects the relaxed, grateful, and friendly attitude of the locals (Ticos). Use it as a greeting, a goodbye, or to say “it’s all good.”
Respect the Wildlife: This is a conservation-first destination. Never feed the animals, and maintain a respectful distance. Use biodegradable sunscreen and insect repellent to protect the delicate aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems.
The “Green Season” Reality: From May to November, expect heavy rain in the afternoons. Don’t let it stop you—the rainforest is at its most vibrant then, and the lightning storms over the gulf are breathtaking. Just bring high-quality waterproof gear.
Early to Bed, Early to Rise: Life in the gulf follows the sun. Most tours begin at 5:00 AM or 6:00 AM to catch wildlife at their most active. Consequently, many towns and lodges go quiet by 9:00 PM.
Hidden Gems:
- Matapalo: Located at the very tip of the Osa Peninsula, this area offers stunning “secret” beaches like Playa Carbonera and incredible waterfall hikes just steps from the road.
- The “Mata de Platano” Lookout: If driving toward Puerto Jimenez, stop at the higher elevations for a panoramic view of the entire turquoise gulf framed by emerald jungle.
- Local Soda Dining: For an authentic and affordable meal, eat at a “Soda” (a small, family-run restaurant). Order a Casado—a hearty plate of rice, beans, salad, plantains, and a protein.
- Golfito’s Duty-Free Zone: If you need supplies or electronics, the “Deposito Libre” in Golfito is a unique tax-free shopping hub used by locals from all over the country.
Language: While lodge staff usually speak English, the rural communities around the gulf appreciate it if you try basic Spanish. Knowing ¿Donde está…? (Where is…?) and La cuenta, por favor (The check, please) goes a long way.
