Local Tips & Transport
4×4 Vehicle is Highly Recommended: While main roads (Route 21) are paved, many of the best “hidden” beaches and luxury villas in the Gold Coast area are accessed via unpaved, bumpy gravel roads. A 4WD SUV provides necessary clearance and traction.
Golf Carts in Beach Towns: In communities like Las Catalinas, Tamarindo, or within the Papagayo Peninsula resorts, golf carts are the preferred (and often most fun) way to zip between the beach, shops, and restaurants.
Private Shuttles vs. Public Buses:
- Private/Shared Shuttles: Services like Interbus or Tropical Tours are the most reliable way to get from Liberia Airport (LIR) to your hotel. They offer door-to-door service and A/C.
- Public Buses: The “Pulmitan de Liberia” buses are very affordable but follow strict schedules and may not stop directly at remote beach resorts.
Water Taxis: In the Papagayo Gulf, water taxis are often faster than driving. For example, a boat ride from Playas del Coco to Playa Hermosa or Playa Panamá can save 20 minutes of winding road travel.
Master the “Pura Vida” Vibe: You will hear “Pura Vida” (Pure Life) constantly. It is used as a greeting, a goodbye, or to say “it’s all good.” Embrace the slower pace; service in restaurants is relaxed and never rushed.
Timing the Tides: The Guanacaste coastline has dramatic tides. Some beaches are great for swimming at high tide but rocky at low tide. Always check a tide chart before planning a beach day or a surf session.
The “Green Season” Perks: From May to November, the region turns lush and green. While it may rain in the afternoons, prices are lower, crowds are thinner, and the landscape is much more vibrant than during the dusty “Gold” (dry) season.
Sun Protection is Mandatory: Being so close to the Equator, the sun is incredibly strong. Apply reef-safe sunscreen frequently, even on cloudy days, to protect your skin and the local marine ecosystem.
Hidden Gems:
- Playa Penca: A quiet, white-sand alternative to the busier Flamingo beach. It’s perfect for those seeking a “secret” spot with calm waters.
- The Gilded Iguana in Nosara: Even if you aren’t staying there, this historic surf club is the place to experience the authentic 1970s “surf-chic” culture of the region.
- Sardinada at a Local Soda: Skip the tourist bistros for one meal and eat at a “Soda” (a small, family-run restaurant). Order a Casado—a traditional plate of rice, beans, salad, plantains, and protein.
- Diamante Eco Adventure Park’s Animal Sanctuary: A great way to see jaguars, monkeys, and frogs in a rescue environment if you don’t have time to trek deep into the southern jungles.
Language: English is very widely spoken in the Gold Coast and Papagayo due to the high volume of international residents. However, a “Gracias” or “Mucho gusto” (nice to meet you/my pleasure) goes a long way in building rapport with Ticos (locals).
