Local Tips & Transport
Inter-City Buses: The main mode of transport between the three capital cities (Armenia, Pereira, and Manizales) and the smaller towns (Salento, Filandia, Pijao) is by bus. Services are frequent and affordable, running from the central Terminal de Transportes in each city.
Jeeps (Willys): For traveling between towns and reaching the secluded coffee fincas and the Cocora Valley, the classic, colorful Willys Jeeps are the iconic and necessary transport. You’ll find them departing from the main squares of smaller towns like Salento.
Local Taxis and Apps: Taxis are readily available in the capital cities. Ride-sharing apps also operate, often offering a slightly cheaper and more reliable service than street taxis.
Airports: The region is served by three main airports: El Edén International Airport (AXM) in Armenia (Quindío), Matecaña International Airport (PEI) in Pereira (Risaralda), and La Nubia Airport (MZL) in Manizales (Caldas). PEI is often the most accessible for international or multiple domestic connections.
Altitude and Climate: Be aware of the varying altitudes. Salento (around 1,900m) and the Cocora Valley are cooler than the capital cities. Manizales is higher (around 2,160m) and can be quite chilly. Pack layers, as the day can range from sunny to rainy with cold evenings.
The Coffee Culture: When visiting a farm, remember that coffee is an integral part of the local economy and identity. The highest-quality beans are often exported, so while you are there, ask for a cup of Café Especial (Specialty Coffee) to taste the best of what the region offers.
The Paisa Identity: The people of this region are known as Paisas. They are celebrated for their strong work ethic, entrepreneurial spirit, and exceptional hospitality. You will find them to be welcoming and proud of their heritage and land.
