Local Tips & Transport
Car is Essential: A 4×4 vehicle is highly recommended, especially during the wet season (October to March). Many of the best waterfalls and remote hiking trailheads are only accessible via unpaved, rough dirt roads. If you do not have a 4×4, be prepared for slow travel and hire local taxis/guides for remote spots.
Getting There: The main entry point is Brasília International Airport (BSB). From BSB, it is a roughly 3-hour drive (230km) to Alto Paraíso de Goiás, the main gateway town, or 4 hours to Cavalcante (for Santa Bárbara). There are also bus services from Brasília’s main bus terminal.
Local Guide Requirements: For many of the most popular and/or protected spots, such as the Santa Bárbara Waterfall and some trails within the National Park, hiring an accredited local guide is mandatory for safety and environmental preservation. Guides can be hired in Alto Paraíso, São Jorge, and Cavalcante.
Inter-Town Travel: The three main base towns are Alto Paraíso de Goiás, São Jorge (closest to the National Park entrance), and Cavalcante (for the Kalunga community). Public transport between these towns is very limited, making a car the most flexible option.
The Energy Vortex: Alto Paraíso is famous for being located on a massive quartz plate and its reputation as a spiritual sanctuary. Many believe this mineral concentration creates a special energy vortex. Embrace the holistic vibe; you will find many vegetarian/vegan restaurants, crystal shops, and meditation centers.
The Cerrado Biome: You are exploring the Brazilian savanna, the world’s most biodiverse savanna. Respect the environment. Stay on marked trails, do not feed the animals, and never leave trash. The environment is extremely sensitive to human impact.
Water Safety: Waterfalls and rivers can change quickly, especially during the rainy season. Ask local guides or park rangers about current conditions. Never dive headfirst into unfamiliar natural pools.
Park Entry and Fees: The Chapada dos Veadeiros National Park (PARNA) requires an entrance fee, and capacity is limited. During high season (holidays, long weekends), arrive early or check in advance to reserve your spot. Most other waterfalls are on private land and charge a separate entrance fee.
Dining Culture: Meals are typically casual. In Alto Paraíso, you’ll find healthy, natural, and spiritual-themed food. In the smaller towns like São Jorge, the food is more rustic and traditional Goiás cuisine. Lunch is the main meal, often enjoyed around 1:00 PM.
Hidden Gems:
Catarata dos Couros: A spectacular, remote sequence of massive waterfalls and pools. It is less crowded than the main National Park falls but requires careful driving (or a guide) to access.
Poço do Macaco (Monkey’s Well): A lesser-known, crystal-clear pool perfect for swimming, often a quiet escape from the busier attractions.
Vila de São Jorge: This small, charming village, right next to the National Park entrance, has a very bohemian, backpacker atmosphere with rustic lodging and lively evening spots.
What to Pack: Sunscreen, a wide-brimmed hat, insect repellent (essential), comfortable hiking shoes (that can get wet), and a small backpack for water and snacks. The sun is intense at this altitude.
