LENÇÓIS MARANHENSES

Lençóis Maranhenses is a vast, otherworldly landscape of brilliant white sand dunes and ephemeral blue and green freshwater lagoons. Located on Brazil’s northeastern coast, it is a geological marvel where water and desert dance.

This park is a unique spectacle of nature, celebrated for its stunning beauty and biological significance. It is a destination that promises adventure and unforgettable, starkly beautiful vistas.

Iconic Lagoons & Dune Fields:

  • Lagoa Azul (Blue Lagoon): One of the most famous and accessible lagoons, known for its deep blue water perfect for swimming.

  • Lagoa Bonita (Beautiful Lagoon): Requires a steep climb up the dune for a rewarding, panoramic view of the entire dune field.

  • Lagoa da Esperança (Hope Lagoon): The largest and most permanent lagoon in the region, forming part of the park’s eastern boundary.

  • Lagoa das Emendadas (Connected Lagoons): A series of interlinked lagoons, often visited on multi-day treks, showcasing the vastness of the park.

  • Lagoa do Peixe (Fish Lagoon): A more remote lagoon known for remaining relatively full even in the dry season, often hosting fish.

  • Queimada dos Britos Oasis: An isolated oasis community inside the park, a traditional resting point for multi-day crossings.

  • Baixa Grande Oasis: Another remote oasis, offering a glimpse into the life of the sertão people within the dunes.

  • Canto dos Lençóis (Corner of Lençóis): The western section of the park, accessible from Santo Amaro do Maranhão, known for wilder dunes.

  • Dunas do Morro do Bode (Bode Hill Dunes): Impressive dune formations near Barreirinhas, often used as a starting point for tours.

  • Praia de Atins (Atins Beach): The coastal edge of the dune field, where the sands meet the Atlantic Ocean.

Gateway Towns & River Activities:

  • Barreirinhas: The main gateway town, offering the most infrastructure and easy access to the central part of the park via the Rio Preguiças.

  • Santo Amaro do Maranhão: A quieter, more authentic gateway with access to the deeper, more stunning lagoons and dune landscape.

  • Atins: A rustic, beach-side village where the Rio Preguiças meets the sea, popular for kite-surfing and fresh seafood.

  • Rio Preguiças (Sloth River): A scenic river that runs along the park’s edge, offering boat tours through mangroves and small villages.

  • Farol de Mandacaru (Mandacaru Lighthouse): A lighthouse in the small village of Mandacaru, offering a high vantage point over the river and the sea.

  • Vassouras (Little Sweeps): A stop along the Rio Preguiças with small dunes and a chance to see local fauna like capuchin monkeys.

  • Caburé: A thin strip of land between the Rio Preguiças and the Atlantic Ocean, known for its deserted beaches and rustic inns.

  • Foz do Rio Preguiças (Preguiças River Mouth): Where the river empties into the Atlantic, a beautiful spot for sunrise and sunset.

Unique Experiences & Culture:

  • Four-Wheeled Drive Tours (4×4): Essential transport to navigate the sand trails to reach the main lagoon complexes.

  • Trekking and Overnight Crossings: Multi-day guided hikes across the vast interior of the dunes, sleeping in the oases.

  • Kite-surfing in Atins: The strong coastal winds make the beaches of Atins a growing hotspot for water sports enthusiasts.

  • Local Gastronomy (Shrimp and Crab): Tasting the region’s famous fresh seafood, particularly the local crab and shrimp dishes.

Trek the Labyrinthine Dunes to the Lagoons: Take a guided 4×4 tour (mandatory) from a gateway town into the core of the park. The main activity is walking across the sweeping white sands to swim in the seasonal freshwater lagoons (best seen from June to September).

Sunset at a High Dune: Join an excursion timed to reach one of the highest points of the dune fields (like the ones near Lagoa Bonita or Lagoa Azul) to witness a spectacular sunset over the endless sands.

Overflight Tour (The “Lençóis View”): Charter a small plane from Barreirinhas for a breathtaking aerial view of the park. This is the only way to truly appreciate the sheer scale and pattern of the dune-and-lagoon landscape.

Kitesurfing in Atins: Head to the remote village of Atins, where the confluence of the Preguiças River and the Atlantic Ocean creates ideal conditions for intermediate to advanced kitesurfing.

Boat Trip on the Preguiças River: Take a boat tour from Barreirinhas down the river, passing through the Pequenos Lençóis (Small Lençóis), stopping at the Mandacaru Lighthouse, and visiting riverside villages like Vassouras (for meeting monkeys) and Caburé.

Swim in the Coastal Lagoons: Travel to the more remote area of Santo Amaro, which offers access to some of the deepest and most picturesque lagoons, such as Lagoa da Gaivota or Lagoa da Betânia.

Dine on Fresh Grilled Shrimp in Atins: Enjoy a legendary meal of fresh-caught jumbo shrimp (known locally as camarão) grilled over a wood fire at a rustic local restaurant (like Canto do Atins) after a day of exploration.

Explore the Foz do Rio Negro: For the adventurous, hire a guide to trek through the dunes to this remote blackwater river outlet where the landscape takes on a more stark and wild beauty.

Learn About the Local Communities: Visit the riverside communities along the Preguiças River, such as Vassouras or Mandacaru, to observe the traditional lives of the ribeirinhos (river people) and buy local crafts.

Stargazing in the Park: Due to the near-total lack of light pollution, take an evening walk or simply look up from your accommodation to witness some of the most spectacular views of the Milky Way and southern constellations.

Beach Walk in Caburé: Take a long stroll along the vast, empty beach of Caburé, a long spit of sand separating the Preguiças River from the Atlantic Ocean, often enjoying fresh coconut water from a beachfront kiosk.

Getting There: Air & Bus: The two main ways to reach the gateway towns are by flying into São Luís (SLZ) or Parnaíba (PHB). From São Luís, you can take a shared minivan, a local bus, or a private transfer to Barreirinhas (about 4-5 hours). Santo Amaro is more difficult to reach, requiring a dedicated 4×4 transfer.

Mandatory 4×4 Transport: Access into the National Park’s dune fields from the gateway towns is strictly regulated and mandatory to be done via licensed, authorized 4×4 vehicles (usually Toyota Hilux trucks). You cannot drive your own vehicle into the park. Always book tours and transfers through reputable local agencies.

Inter-Town Travel: The primary way to move between Barreirinhas, Atins, and Santo Amaro is by 4×4 or riverboat. Atins, in particular, is only accessible via riverboat from Barreirinhas or a long 4×4 ride across the beach/river mouth.

Travel Times: While the distances on a map seem short, the rough terrain means travel takes time. The 90km drive from Barreirinhas to the main lagoons can take 1.5 to 2 hours each way in a 4×4.

The Best Time to Visit (Lagoon Levels): The key natural feature is the freshwater lagoons, which are fed by the rain. The peak season for the fullest lagoons is June to September, after the rainy season (Jan-May). Visiting in October to December means the lagoons will likely be partially or completely dry.

Protection is Paramount: The sun is incredibly intense reflecting off the white sand. High-SPF waterproof sunscreen, a wide-brimmed hat, UV-protective sunglasses, and a light long-sleeved shirt are non-negotiable essentials. Bring plenty of water, as there are no facilities inside the park.

The Gateway Town Choice: Your choice of base dictates your experience:

  • Barreirinhas: The most developed, offering the widest range of hotels, restaurants, and tours. It is the hub for river tours and flights.
  • Santo Amaro: Less developed, harder to reach, but offers more remote, deeper, and less crowded lagoons for a more authentic nature experience.
  • Atins: A small, rustic fishing village at the river/sea junction, popular with backpackers and kitesurfers. Known for its tranquility and fresh seafood.

Respect the Dunes and Lagoons: The area is a fragile ecosystem. Only walk in designated areas, avoid littering, and never use soap or shampoo when swimming in the freshwater lagoons.

Wear Light, Practical Footwear: Inside the dune fields, you must walk barefoot or in flip-flops, as the fine white sand quickly fills shoes. The sand gets hot in the midday sun, so plan walks for early morning or late afternoon.

Hidden Culinary Gems: Seek out the simple local eateries (restaurantes rústicos) outside the main town centers. The region is famous for its fresh fish, shrimp, and caju (cashew) fruit juice. Don’t miss the local cheese (queijo coalho) grilled over a fire.

Language: Portuguese is the only reliable language spoken. While tour guides in Barreirinhas may speak basic English or Spanish, learning a few phrases will greatly enhance your interaction with locals in the smaller villages like Atins and Santo Amaro.
