Local Tips & Transport
Mombasa-Lunga Lunga Road: This is the main artery connecting the South Coast. Diani Beach is easily accessible via the Ukunda Airstrip or the Likoni Ferry from Mombasa.
Diani’s Primary Transport – Tuk-Tuks and Motorbike Taxis (Boda Bodas):
- Tuk-Tuks: The most common and recommended way to travel short distances in Diani. They are affordable, readily available, and a fun way to get around. Always agree on the fare before you start the journey.
- Boda Bodas: Best for short trips or single riders who are comfortable with the speed. Use them with caution and only for very short distances.
Mombasa Access – The Likoni Ferry: To travel to or from Mombasa (including the airport/train station), you must cross the Likoni Channel via the vehicle and pedestrian ferry. Plan for delays at this crossing, especially during rush hour, as it can be time-consuming. An alternative is the new Dongo Kundu Bypass (Mombasa Southern Bypass), which avoids the ferry for vehicles coming from Mombasa.
Flights: The easiest way to arrive is to fly into Ukunda Airstrip (UKA) from Nairobi (NBO) or other safari hubs. Transfers to Diani resorts are quick and easy.
Respect the Swahili Culture: The coast is predominantly Muslim. While resort wear is fine on the beach, when visiting towns, villages, or religious sites, it is respectful for both men and women to cover shoulders and knees.
Language: While English is widely spoken in the tourism industry, the local language is Swahili. Learning a few common phrases will be warmly received: Jambo (Hello), Asante (Thank you), Karibu (Welcome/You’re welcome), and Pole Pole (Slowly, slowly—a good phrase for reminding drivers).
Dealing with Beach Vendors (“Beach Boys”): Diani’s beach is public, and you will be approached by vendors offering everything from safaris to carvings. A polite but firm “Hapana, Asante” (“No, thank you”) is usually sufficient. Remember they are just trying to make a living.
The Tidal Effect: The Indian Ocean experiences significant tidal changes. During low tide, the water can recede far out, exposing coral and tidal pools. This is a beautiful time for exploring but means swimming is best planned for high tide.
Drinking Water and Safety: Only drink bottled water. Be cautious about the freshness of unpeeled fruits and street food, though resort food is generally safe.
Hidden Gems
- Skating in the Sands (Low Tide): The sand flats at low tide, particularly near Galu Beach, become a smooth, hard surface perfect for a long, peaceful walk or even cycling.
- Sheldrick Falls at Shimba Hills: After a game drive, take the guided walk down to this stunning waterfall for a cool, refreshing dip in the pool below.
- The Shimoni Slave Caves: On the mainland opposite Wasini Island, these historic caves were once used as holding pens for slaves. They offer a poignant and powerful historical insight, usually combined with a dhow trip.
