LAKE MANYARA NATIONAL PARK & ARUSHA

Lake Manyara National Park and the Arusha region represent a stunning microcosm of Tanzania’s immense natural beauty and vibrant Maasai culture. This area offers a perfect blend of wildlife, magnificent scenery, and a gateway to Africa’s highest peaks.

The region is famous for its tree-climbing lions, incredible birdlife, and the dramatic rift valley escarpment. Arusha acts as the primary hub, providing a vibrant urban contrast to the surrounding pristine wilderness.

Lake Manyara National Park Wildlife & Scenery:

  • Tree-Climbing Lions: The park’s most famous residents, often seen lounging in the acacia trees.

  • Flamingo Flocks (Seasonal): Massive numbers of pink flamingos congregate on the alkaline lake, creating a spectacular sight.

  • Great Rift Valley Escarpment: A dramatic geological feature forming the park’s western boundary, offering incredible views.

  • Hot Springs (Maji Moto): Natural geothermal springs located on the park’s southern edge.

  • Groundwater Forest: A dense forest fed by underground springs, home to troops of baboons and blue monkeys.

  • Hippos at the Hippo Pool: A popular spot for viewing large pods of hippos submerged in the murky water.

  • Elephant Herds: Known for a high concentration of large tuskers moving through the landscape.

  • Birdwatching: Over 400 species of birds, making it a crucial stop for ornithologists.

  • Canoeing Safaris: Offered on the lake during the wet season, providing a unique perspective on the wildlife.

  • Treetop Walkway: A 370-meter airwalk through the forest canopy, offering a unique viewing experience.

Arusha City Core & Cultural Sites:

  • Arusha Clock Tower: Often considered the midpoint between Cairo and Cape Town.

  • Arusha Central Market: A bustling, vibrant market perfect for experiencing local life and purchasing fresh produce.

  • Tanzanite Experience Museum: Learn about and purchase the rare Tanzanite gemstone, mined only in this region.

  • National Natural History Museum: Located in the Old Boma, it covers human evolution, wildlife, and natural history.

  • Cultural Heritage Centre: A large complex featuring African artifacts, art, a history museum, and gemstone stores.

  • Shanga Workshop: A social enterprise creating unique, high-quality handmade jewelry and glass from recycled materials.

  • Meserani Snake Park: An educational center focusing on snakes and offering cultural tours to the nearby Maasai Boma.

Arusha Region & Highlands:

  • Mount Meru: Africa’s fifth-highest mountain, located in Arusha National Park, popular for acclimatization climbs.

  • Arusha National Park: Known for the beautiful Momella Lakes, the Ngurdoto Crater, and diverse wildlife including colobus monkeys.

  • Maasai Bomas: Traditional Maasai villages where visitors can experience their culture, song, and dance.

  • Monduli Mountains: Scenic highlands offering cultural tours and hikes through Maasai territory.

Go on a Game Drive in Lake Manyara National Park: Search for the park’s famous tree-climbing lions, large troops of baboons, and immense flocks of flamingos on the lake shore.

Experience a Cultural Boma Visit: Spend time in an authentic Maasai Boma (village) near Arusha or Manyara to learn about their semi-nomadic traditions, cattle culture, and colorful dress.

Canoe Safari on Lake Manyara: Take a guided canoe trip on the lake during the wet season for a unique perspective on the birdlife, hippos, and buffalo along the water’s edge.

Visit the Shanga Workshop: Tour this successful social enterprise outside Arusha that employs people with disabilities to create beautiful recycled glass, paper, and aluminum goods.

Trek to the Hot Springs (Chemka/Rundugai): Enjoy a swim in the crystal-clear, warm spring-fed waters surrounded by lush fig trees—a perfect way to relax after a dusty safari.

Coffee Plantation Tour: Visit a local farm near Arusha, often called the “coffee capital” of Tanzania, to learn about the bean-to-cup process, from harvesting to roasting, and enjoy a fresh brew.

Explore Arusha’s Central Market: Immerse yourself in the sights, sounds, and smells of a bustling East African market, a great place to buy fresh produce, spices, and local crafts.

Take a Mountain Bike Tour: Cycle through local villages and farmlands on the outskirts of Lake Manyara, offering a close-up look at rural Tanzanian life.

Visit the Olduvai Gorge & Laetoli: Take a day trip (though slightly further afield) to the cradle of mankind, where some of the earliest human fossils and footprints were discovered.

Walk the Treetop Walkway: Experience the lush forest canopy of Lake Manyara on the Treetop Walkway, a suspended bridge adventure offering an aerial view of the forest and wildlife.

Safari Vehicles are Standard: For safaris in Lake Manyara, you will use specialized 4×4 vehicles (usually Land Cruisers or Land Rovers) with pop-up roofs for optimal game viewing and photography.

Arusha Airport (ARK) for Connecting Flights: Arusha has a small domestic airport. It’s used primarily for scheduled or chartered flights to and from Dar es Salaam and Zanzibar, and often for flights connecting to the Serengeti and other parks.

Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) is the Main Gateway: The closest major international airport is JRO, located about an hour’s drive from Arusha. You will need to pre-arrange a taxi or shuttle transfer to your accommodation.

Getting Around Arusha: Within Arusha town, the main modes of transport are taxis (which should be negotiated before you get in) and dala-dalas (crowded, local mini-buses). Use taxis for safety and convenience, especially at night.

Car Rentals for Self-Drive: Renting a car for self-drive is not recommended for tourists in Tanzania, especially for safaris. Roads can be poor, signage is limited, and local driving habits are challenging. Always book transfers and safaris with reputable companies.

The Greetings are Important: Politeness is highly valued. Always start a conversation with a proper greeting in Swahili, such as Jambo (Hello) or Habari (How are you?). A friendly “thank you” (Asante) goes a long way.

Tipping Etiquette: Tipping is customary and expected, especially for safari guides, lodge staff, and porters, as salaries in the service industry can be low. Tip your safari guide generously at the end of the trip, usually in US Dollars or Tanzanian Shillings.

“Pole Pole” is the Way of Life: Tanzania operates on a much slower pace—Pole Pole (pronounced po-leh po-leh) means “slowly, slowly.” Be patient with service, and don’t expect things to move as fast as they do at home.

Currency and Payments: The local currency is the Tanzanian Shilling (TZS), but US Dollars (printed 2009 or newer) are widely accepted for tourist services, lodge payments, and park fees. Always carry smaller denominations of both currencies.

Respectful Photography: Always ask for permission before taking a photo of a local person, especially members of the Maasai community. They may charge a small fee, which you should be prepared to pay.

Water Safety: Only drink bottled water and avoid tap water, even for brushing your teeth. Ice outside of reputable tourist hotels/lodges should also be avoided.

Hidden Gems

  • The Cultural Heritage Centre (Arusha): Much more than a souvenir shop, this center features art galleries, curio shops, a Tanzanite museum, and restaurants in a stunning, traditionally designed building.
  • Engare Sero Footprints (Near Manyara): If the conditions are right, you can visit recently discovered sets of ancient human footprints, often less crowded than the famous ones at Laetoli.
  • Lake Eyasi: A few hours drive from Lake Manyara, this is the home of the Hadza hunter-gatherer tribe. A visit here offers a rare and authentic cultural immersion, often involving a morning hunt.
  • Meserani Snake Park: Located a short drive outside Arusha, this park is home to a variety of African snakes and offers venom extraction demonstrations, as well as a chance to interact with a Maasai guide.
