Local Tips & Transport
Scooter is King: The best way to explore the South Coast’s scattered beaches and viewpoints is by renting a scooter (approx. $3.50-$5.50 per day). The main roads are generally well-paved, but paths to the more secluded beaches can be rough dirt tracks—drive cautiously!
Hiring a Driver: For longer journeys, or if you are uncomfortable on a scooter, hiring a private car and driver for a half or full day is a comfortable and affordable option (approx. $25-$40 for a half-day tour).
Local Taxis & Ride-Sharing: Local scooter taxis (ojek) are common, and ride-sharing apps like Grab are available in the Kuta town center and to/from the airport, but their availability can be limited in more remote beach areas.
Airport Transfer: Lombok International Airport (LOP) is only a 20-30 minute drive from Kuta. Pre-arranging a transfer or using a fixed-rate taxi is the most convenient option.
The Sasak People: The indigenous people of Lombok are the Sasak. Respect their conservative culture by dressing modestly when visiting local villages, markets, or religious sites—cover shoulders and knees.
Bargaining: Prices for souvenirs, local transport, and non-menu items at markets or small shops are often negotiable. Bargain respectfully and with a smile.
Touts and Vendors: You may encounter persistent vendors selling bracelets, sarongs, or other items on the main beaches. A polite but firm “Tidak, terima kasih” (No, thank you) is usually sufficient.
Right Hand Only: In Indonesian culture, it is polite to use only your right hand for eating, handing over money, or giving/receiving items, as the left hand is traditionally considered unclean.
Eating Local: Don’t miss the local food. Try a Warung (small family-owned restaurant) for the cheapest and most authentic Indonesian dishes. Lombok is famous for Ayam Taliwang (spicy grilled chicken).
Cash is Best: While hotels and larger restaurants accept cards, most small warungs, surf rentals, and village entrances require Indonesian Rupiah (IDR) cash. ATM access is generally limited outside of the main Kuta town.
Beach Fees: Some of the popular beaches may have a small parking/entrance fee (around $0.60-$1.20) charged by local community groups to help with upkeep.
