PUNJAB

Punjab is the heartland of the Sikh faith and India’s agricultural engine, known for its vibrant energy and unmatched hospitality. It is a land of rich harvests, dynamic bhangra music, and a profound, living history.

This region is where the Guru Granth Sahib was compiled, forming a deep spiritual and cultural anchor. From the reverence of Amritsar to the dynamic capital, Punjab offers a journey into the soul of a powerful, resilient culture.

Train is King for Inter-City Travel: The Indian Railways network is extensive and the most comfortable, scenic, and cost-effective way to travel between major cities like Amritsar, Ludhiana, and Jalandhar. The Shatabdi Express is an excellent option for a fast, air-conditioned journey from Delhi to Amritsar.

Taxis and Auto-Rickshaws: Within cities, auto-rickshaws (Tuk-Tuks) are readily available and affordable for short distances. Always agree on the fare before starting your journey, or use ride-sharing apps like Ola or Uber in major urban centers.

Buses and Local Transport: State-run and private bus services connect almost every town and village. They are crowded but very economical. For a more authentic experience, local buses are essential, but for comfort, stick to private, air-conditioned options for longer routes.

Amritsar Airport: Sri Guru Ram Dass Jee International Airport (ATQ) is well-connected. Taxis and pre-paid cab services are the best way to get from the airport to the city center.

Hospitality is Paramount: Punjabis are renowned for their warm hospitality and generosity. It’s common for locals to offer you food or tea (Chai)—accepting graciously, even if only a small amount, is a sign of respect. Declining can sometimes be seen as an insult.

The Golden Temple Etiquette: When visiting any Gurdwara (Sikh temple), you must cover your head (a scarf or patka is required), remove your shoes, and wash your feet at the entrance. Dress modestly, covering shoulders and knees. Silence and respect inside the complex are mandatory.

Dining Culture: Punjabi food is rich, butter-laden, and delicious. Be prepared for generous portions! Lunch is typically around 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM, and dinner is later, often starting after 8:30 PM. Don’t miss trying a roadside Dhaba (eatery) for authentic, rustic fare.

Bargaining is Expected: When shopping in local markets (for clothing, souvenirs, etc.) and negotiating fares with auto-rickshaws, polite bargaining is a common practice and expected. Start at a lower price and meet somewhere in the middle.

Avoid the Summer Heat: The months of May and June are extremely hot, with temperatures often well over 40°C (104°F). The best time to visit is October to March when the weather is cool and pleasant.
