Local Tips & Transport
Getting to the Area: The primary gateway is Changbaishan Airport (NBS), located near the West Slope entrance. Alternatively, you can take a high-speed train to Changbaishan Station or nearby cities like Yanji or Jilin City and then take a bus or hired car to the main tourist towns like Erdaobaihe.
Accessing the Scenic Area: Private vehicles are not allowed inside the Changbai Mountain Scenic Area. All tourists must take a park-operated “Green Bus” from the entrance gate (Tourist Distribution Center) to the various slope transfer centers.
Slope-Specific Transport: To get to the top viewing platform of Heaven Lake on the North Slope, you must take a special, high-altitude minivan or off-road shuttle bus from the North Slope transfer center. On the West Slope, reaching the viewing platform often requires climbing a long set of stairs (around 1,400 steps).
Navigating the Slopes: Changbai Mountain has four main slopes, but only the North Slope and West Slope are accessible from the Chinese side and open to the public (the East is in North Korea; the South is often closed). The North Slope is generally more developed and offers more attractions like the waterfall and hot springs, while the West Slope offers a more panoramic view of Heaven Lake.
Local Transfers: The main base town for the North Slope is Erdaobaihe, and for the West Slope, it’s Songjianghe. Taxis or local buses connect these towns to the scenic area entrances. For flexibility, hiring a private car or driver for travel between the slopes and towns is common.
Fickle Weather and Visibility: The weather on the mountain is highly unpredictable. Heaven Lake is famous for being visible only a limited number of days per year—sometimes only 100 days—due to clouds and fog. Be prepared for any weather, and have a flexible itinerary; the scenic area ticket is often valid for a few days to allow for a second attempt to see the lake.
Dress in Layers: Given the high altitude (Heaven Lake is above 2,100 meters), it’s significantly colder and windier at the summit, even in summer. Always bring warm clothes, a windbreaker, and suitable footwear, regardless of the season. In winter, temperatures can drop below -40ºC.
Peak Season: Summer (July and August) is the peak season for escaping the heat but also for crowds and potential rain/fog. Winter (November to March) is ideal for snow sports and hot springs. Autumn often offers the best chance of clear weather and colorful foliage for photography.
Embrace the Korean Influence: The Changbai Mountain region is home to a large population of the Korean ethnic group (Chaoxianzu). You’ll find many signs in both Chinese and Korean, and the local cuisine is a blend of Northeast Chinese and Korean flavors—don’t miss trying local Korean barbecue or rice cakes.
Respect the Sacred Status: Changbai Mountain (known as Mount Paektu in Korean) is considered sacred by both the Chinese and Korean people. When visiting, adhere strictly to all park rules to help preserve its unique natural and cultural environment.
Hidden Gems and Experiences:
- Hot Spring Boiled Eggs: A unique local snack! You can buy eggs cooked directly in the natural hot spring vents at Julongquan, giving them a distinct, slightly sulfuric flavor.
- The Rime/Fog: In the winter mornings, the steam from the hot springs and the river often freezes onto the trees and banks, creating spectacular rime ice (or “tree hangings”), a breathtaking natural phenomenon.
- Ginseng Shopping: The mountain region is famous for its high-quality ginseng. While buying, ensure you purchase from reputable vendors to guarantee authenticity.
- Erdaobaihe Town: Often called the “First Town of Changbai Mountain,” this vibrant base has a strong Korean influence and is a pleasant place to stay, with numerous local restaurants and unique architecture.
