Local Tips & Transport
Driving is Recommended: Qinghai is a vast province, and for maximum flexibility to explore its high-altitude lakes and remote monasteries, self-driving or hiring a private car/driver is the most efficient method. Roads between major sites like Xining, Qinghai Lake, and Chaka Lake are generally well-maintained.
Xining as the Hub: The capital, Xining, is the primary transportation gateway. It has an airport (Xining Caojiabao International Airport, XNN) and a major railway station connecting to the rest of China, including the iconic Qinghai-Tibet Railway.
Trains/Buses to the Lake: Local buses run from Xining to major towns near the lake, such as Heimahe or Gonghe, but this is a much slower option and limits roadside stops. Trains also connect Xining to Haiyan and Gangcha on the northern side of the lake.
Taxi/DiDi in Xining: Within Xining city, taxis and ride-sharing services (like DiDi) are readily available and affordable. For longer distances, a hired car service is better.
Altitude and Driving: When self-driving, be mindful of the high altitude, especially on passes. Carry oxygen supplies and be aware of unpredictable weather and potential livestock (yaks and sheep) on the roads.
Altitude Acclimatization is Crucial: Qinghai is on the Tibetan Plateau, with Xining at about 2,200m (7,200ft) and Qinghai Lake at about 3,200m (10,500ft). Plan a day or two in Xining before heading to higher altitudes. Walk slowly, avoid strenuous exercise, and drink plenty of water to prevent or ease altitude sickness.
The Best Time to Visit: The period from June to September offers the best weather, with July-August being the prime season for green grasslands, the Menyuan rapeseed flowers, and the busiest time for tourism. Be prepared for cold nights, even in summer.
Respecting Local Culture: Qinghai is a melting pot of Han, Tibetan, Hui, Mongol, and other ethnic groups.
- In Monasteries: Be respectful of the Tibetan Buddhist faith. Walk clockwise around temples and stupas. Ask for permission before taking photos of monks or pilgrims.
- With Nomads: Always ask for permission before entering a nomad’s yurt or taking their photo, and offer to pay a small fee as a gesture of respect.
Cuisine Highlights: Don’t miss the local delicacies, which are influenced by the plateau and nomadic life:
- Hand-Pulled Lamb (Shou Zhua Yang Rou): A simple, boiled dish eaten with salt, a staple.
- Yak Yogurt: A thick, sour yogurt, often served with sugar.
- Tsampa: A Tibetan dough of roasted barley flour, a traditional food.
Packing Essentials: Due to the strong high-altitude UV rays, pack a high-SPF sunscreen, sunglasses, and a wide-brimmed hat. Always wear layers, as the temperature difference between day and night is significant.
