Local Tips & Transport
Minibus (Dolmuş) is King: The most common, cheapest, and easiest way to travel short distances within Kuşadası and to nearby towns like Selçuk (the town nearest to Ephesus) is by dolmuş (shared minibus/taxi).
To Ephesus/Selçuk: Take a dolmuş marked “Selçuk” from Kuşadası’s main minibus station or stops. It drops you at the Selçuk bus station, where you can easily find another dolmuş or a taxi for the final short ride to the Ephesus Ancient City gates. The journey takes about 30 minutes in total.
Within Kuşadası: Dolmuş routes run frequently along the main roads, connecting the town center with popular areas like Ladies Beach (Kadınlar Plajı) and the Marina. Fares are paid in cash (Turkish Lira, TL) directly to the driver.
Taxis & Private Transfers: Yellow taxis are readily available, especially at the port and major hotels.
Taxi Tip: Always agree on a price with the driver before getting into a taxi, particularly for a trip as far as Ephesus, as not all use the meter for longer routes.
Tours/Transfers: For a hassle-free visit to the ancient sites, consider booking an organized tour or private transfer, which often includes air-conditioned transport and a licensed guide.
Driving & Parking: If renting a car, driving is straightforward, and parking is available at the major sites, though it may involve a fee. A car is recommended for exploring more distant areas like Şirince or the National Park.
Best Time for Ancient Sites: Visit Ephesus and the other ancient sites early in the morning (right at opening) or late in the afternoon to avoid the intense midday heat, large tour bus crowds (especially from cruise ships), and the bright sun for photography.
Currency & Payment: The official currency is the Turkish Lira (TL). While Euros (€) and US Dollars ($) are often accepted in tourist shops and at the port, you will get a better value using Turkish Lira, especially for dolmuş fares, local markets, and smaller restaurants. ATMs are widely available.
Haggling in the Bazaar: In tourist shops and the Grand Bazaar, haggling is expected and part of the shopping culture. Start at about 50-70% of the asking price and negotiate politely. Fixed prices are the norm in modern supermarkets, malls, and established restaurants.
Embrace the Tea Culture: Tea (çay) is the national drink. You will often be offered complimentary tea while shopping for carpets or jewelry, or simply as a sign of hospitality. Accepting is polite, but you are not obligated to buy anything.
Dining Customs:
Lunch & Dinner: Dining times are flexible, but dinner for locals often starts around 8:00 PM or later.
Mezes & Seafood: Kuşadası, as a coastal town, is famous for its fresh seafood and a variety of delicious mezes. Don’t miss trying local specialties like Gözleme (traditional savory Turkish flatbread).
Hidden Gems & Lesser-Known Sites:
Ephesus Experience Museum: Located near the ancient city, this museum offers an 18-minute audiovisual show that brings the history of Ephesus to life.
The Cave of Zeus (Zeus Mağarası): A small, cool cave with a natural spring located near the entrance of the Dilek Peninsula National Park. Myth says Zeus hid here from his brother Poseidon. Great for a refreshing (but cold!) swim break.
Ephesus Museum (Selçuk): Located in the nearby town of Selçuk, this museum houses many of the most significant artifacts and statues unearthed from the Ephesus site, including the famous statues of Artemis.
Attire for Religious Sites: When visiting the House of the Virgin Mary, the Basilica of St. John, or a mosque, it is respectful to dress modestly. Shoulders and knees should be covered. Scarves are recommended for women to cover their heads before entering a mosque.
