Local Tips & Transport
Walking in Kaleiçi: The old town is entirely pedestrian-friendly and best explored on foot. You will need to walk to fully appreciate its unique architecture and hidden corners.
Tram & Tram (Nostalji): Antalya has a modern tram system and the charming Nostalji Tram.
Modern Tram (Antray): Connects the city center to outer districts, the bus station (Otogar), and the airport (AYT). It’s fast and efficient for longer distances.
Nostalji Tram: A single, quaint line that runs along the coast and through the main modern avenues, connecting the Archeological Museum, Konyaaltı Beach, and Kaleiçi. It’s a cheap and scenic way to get around the main sites.
Buses: An extensive and affordable public bus network covers the whole city and surrounding areas. You must purchase an Antalyakart (a rechargeable smart card) from kiosks to use the buses and trams, as cash is not accepted.
Taxis: Taxis are abundant and metered. For peace of mind, use the ubiquitous “Taksi Çağır” button boxes found on street poles, which call the nearest registered taxi and display its number.
From the Airport (AYT): The most direct way is a taxi or the Antray modern tram line, which connects both terminals to the city center and the Otogar (bus station). Public Havaş or Antalya Büyükşehir shuttle buses also run a regular, affordable service.
Bargaining: In the Grand Bazaar and smaller tourist-focused shops, bargaining is expected, especially for items like carpets, jewelry, and leather goods. Always start lower than the asking price, but keep the negotiations light and friendly.
The Turkish Breakfast (Kahvaltı): Do not miss a traditional Turkish breakfast. It is a spectacular spread, not a quick meal, often including multiple types of cheese, olives, fresh tomatoes and cucumbers, eggs, pastries, jams, honey, and fresh bread. It is a cultural experience in itself.
Respecting Mosques: When visiting a mosque, remember to be respectful. Dress modestly (shoulders and knees covered), and women must cover their heads (scarves are often provided). Remove your shoes before entering. Avoid visiting during prayer times.
The Power of the Çay: Turks are famous for their love of tea (Çay). You will be offered a small, tulip-shaped glass of black tea everywhere—in shops, hotels, and after meals. Accepting a glass is a gesture of friendship and hospitality.
Hidden Gems:
Yivliminare Mosque (Fluted Minaret): Located just outside Kaleiçi’s main gate, this Seljuk-era mosque is one of the most distinctive landmarks in Antalya, dating back to the 13th century.
The Broken Minaret (Kesik Minare): Located inside Kaleiçi, this minaret has served as a Roman temple, a Byzantine church, and a mosque throughout its history, showcasing Antalya’s layered past.
Antalya’s Local Markets (Pazars): Seek out a neighborhood pazar (market) for an authentic, lively experience. They rotate days and locations, offering incredible fresh produce, spices, and local textiles at very good prices.
The Old Roman Harbor: While the old town is busy, take a walk down to the marina in the evening to watch the fishing boats and sunset. It’s a peaceful contrast to the hustle of the streets above.
Tipping (Bahşiş): While not mandatory, tipping is appreciated. In restaurants, a 5–10% tip is standard. For taxis, round up the fare. For hotel services, a small amount of cash is customary.
